What is ELAC?

ELAC stands for English Learner Advisory Committee.

Every school in California with 21 or more English Learner (EL) students is required to have an ELAC. This committee is made up of parents, staff, and sometimes students, who meet regularly to discuss how the school can best support English Learners.

The purpose of ELAC is to:

  • Advise the principal and school staff on programs and services for English Learners.

  • Review student achievement data and give input on how to close learning gaps.

  • Help develop the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) with a focus on English Learners.

  • Promote parent engagement by encouraging families to be involved in their child’s education.

Who can join?

  • Parents/guardians of English Learners (they must make up the majority of members).

  • Other parents, staff, and community members are welcome to participate.

ELAC gives families a voice and a partnership role in ensuring English Learners succeed academically while becoming bilingual, biliterate, and prepared for the future.
